The fire extinguisher, a compulsory equipment for vehicles in Belgium

The fireextinguisher is an indispensable device to prevent fires and the resulting damage. Indeed, it allows you to act quickly on the fire and prevent it from spreading. In Belgium, the law requires motorists to have an extinguisher in their vehicle. For the time being, this regulation has not been generalised in Europe. Only Belgium, Turkey, Greece and Poland have introduced it.

The model offire extinguisher to be put in a vehicle varies according to its weight:

• For cars of less than 3.5 tons (passenger cars and vans) a 1 kg ABC powder extinguisher with the BENOR label is required;
• For cars with a maximum authorised mass between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, you must have a 2 kg ABC powder extinguisher with a BENOR label ;
• For vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tons, the law requires the use of a 3 kg ABC powder extinguisher with the BENOR label.

At European level, thecar fire extinguisher is compulsory for trucks. A 6 kg model with ABC powder is required.

Using a car fire extinguisher: precautions for use

Thecar fire extinguisher works on the same principle as the models installed in public or private places. It contains a substance called " extinguishing agent". The latter is used to fight fire. To extinguish it, you must target the source of the flames.

In some cases the flames are not visible. You will have to use the wheel arches or the front grille of your vehicle to reach them. The bottle must be shaken before and during each use. The 1 kg format of Safe-T is still interesting because of its manoeuvrability. Be careful, however, if you see black smoke coming out of your bonnet. Do not open it. The smoke could spread.

Also, make sure the needle on the pressure gauge of your fire extinguisher is in the green zone. Your bottle will need to be replaced if the needle is in the red zone. Note, however, that a car fire ext inguisher can keep its pressure for several years.

Useful dates must be respected. Indeed, the substance contained in your extinguisher and the seals become defective as soon as the date is exceeded. In this case, the device must be replaced.
